The problem with browsers

Damned tech.

What with all the general virus warnings and doom-saying statements about hackers getting into websites and hijacking personal information - particularly credit card details and such (to the point where I believe that even Microsquash have advised against using Internet Explorer particularly where transactions are involved) - I decided to download and install Firefox from the Mozilla website. I theoretically have mozilla on the machine already, but I think one of my periodic download and decode escapades from the Usenet might have shagged it. It won't load any more.

So, I thought, Firefox or another of the Netscape derived freebies out there.

Well, you do get what you pay for in this world, bearing in mind just how long a 4.86 meg download takes on a 56k modem, I got the browser set-up file and installed.

It looks good.

But it won't acknowledge the existence of LiveJournal. Just a blank page. I looked at the settings and they seemed OK, so I thought I'd google LiveJournal to see if there was any information relevant to the problem.

No google.

"Right" thinks I, "Let's go to the mozilla.org home page and see if there is any trouble shooting advice for this problem."

No mozilla home page. Firefox can't find its own homepage.

I logged off and logged back on. I rebooted the PC and logged back on. I uninstalled and reinstalled, rebooted logged on and off again.

I'm back to Internet Explorer with a note on my PC monitor reminding me not to buy off the web with credit card details.

Bloody tech.

I'm sorry to hear you had such probs with Firefox, Bry - it's one of the best browsers around...

Are you still running Win 98?

Are you sure it was a complete, non-corrupted download?

(These may be dumb questions, and if so apologies...)

I concur, FireFox is great and it's what I'm using to type this.
I'm also migrating the Thunderbird for email (although on linux)

OTT - I'm still using FF 0.8 as FF 0.9 coincided woth some "memory strangeness" encouraging me to re-boot.

Yes, I'm still on 98 - does that matter?

I think the download was OK though I may try again (or find a disk on a magazine somewhere). The annoying thing is that it's not consistent insofar as it will find some sites and not others - including its own homepage! Where it doesn't find a site I just get a blank screen, so there's no sign it's even looked for it...

Fire Fox?

You probably downloaded the 0.9 version.

Romney is still using 0.8 and probably has the install lying around somewhere.

This can of course be slapped on a CD for you, along with any other downloaded goodies you may want - The new Stargate should be available this weekend.
