Making a spectacle

I really, really, dislike wearing glasses. Thank God I only need them for reducing eyestrain while I’m using the computer.

I doubt that there is any other single item that gets so grungy with so little provocation that a pair of glasses. The simple act of putting them on ensures that you have to take them back off immediately to polish the lenses. Half the time all that achieves is to move the smear around the glass; it doesn’t actually go anywhere. For the first time in ages, I have brought my rucksack with me today. This means that at least I have a supply of Boots’ Spectacle Lens Cleaner, which makes life a little easier.

And sticking the bloody glass cases in your pocket buggers the shape of your coat or jacket. Suddenly it is impossible to button up properly without it looking as though there is some horrific goitre hidden under your clothes. If you leave the glasses out of their case, you risk damage to the brutes and they attract grease, finger prints, dust and grime immediately.

How do people who wear the damned things all the time cope?

It's all much easier.

We put them on, they stay there without getting handled. As a result they need less cleaning.

A spare pair doesn't nee to be as immediately to hand - so the case can be in a briefcase, or computer case, rather than a pocket.

As they're there all the time, a low-level of dirt is much less noticeable. Obviously real smudges still have ot be cleaned.

As Oldnick says, if you wear them all the time they get much less grungy as they aren't being put on and taken off all the time. I clean mine once or twice a week.

I *love* wearing glasses!

You need a chain round your neck for them.

Mr M has just become an intermittent spectacles wearer, I wear mine all the time - but only to see with. I have varifocal lenses and these mean you develop a nod - head tilted back to see the monitor, then chin on chest to look at person on otherside of room because they are talking to you. Head up and peer through lower half of lenses to read a book then chin on chest to look at TV.
The others are right about them not being cleaned as often as the intermittent ones - I have been known to comment on the misty weather only to be told that my specs need cleaning. Downside of always on specs is the steaming up that happens when you come in from cold weather outside and the house is warm. Then you experience instant cataracts and fall over the cat.
You could always carry a rucksack or one of those things that look like a bowling-ball bag but they have lots of zips and pockets and can hang from your belt if it is strong enough.

Also, wearing on them all the time means you sit on them far less frequently. That can get very expensive....

The world just looks perpetually grungy...

If I wear glasses I can't walk or eat because having the bit visible below the glasses screws up my depth perception. So I have to wear contact lenses, which is better because I can forget about them. Heaven knows what I'd have to do if I had to wear glasses - I don't even own a pair of the correct prescription anymore!
