Sherry, Niles?

It seems that my life is in danger of taking a turn to the pompous.

Having decided to nip down the Manor Arms for the odd pint or two around 9.30 this evening I found myself in conversation towards closing time with Alec sans LJ and [livejournal.com profile] romney. Alec is a Scotsman with some interesting political views. That is to say that he is, like far too many people of my acquaintance (though thankfully, probably not you, dear reader), somewhat left-wing with fascist overtones.

The fact that in general his views are reasonably socialist doesn't bother me; though I don't necessarily share them. The bit that baffles (and worries) me is the overlay of really quite extreme values, which co-exist in relative harmony inside his head.

It is not, however, this example of cognitive dissonance that forms the basis of this piece. The conversation was merely a catalyst for a sudden and rather odd revelation.

During the converstion, which at this point had turned into a diatribe on creeping nazification, I pulled up short in the realisation that whilst making a point I actually used the phrase "I submit that this shows..."

Now there is a form of language that does not sit easily in the bars of south London pubs on a Sunday evening and this is one of them. To compound the horror, the next words out of my mouth were, "Oh dear God, I'm turning into...".

On the way home, [livejournal.com profile] romney and I were mulling this over - the conversation and my realisation both. It was when I pointed out, with the words, "But he was talking palpable nonsense" that I proved finally that am indeed becoming Frasier Crane.

that is, in its entirety, really, not a problem ... truly.. ;)

(you make me laugh so much!)..

Considering just how banale most of my life is, it does have the habit from time to time of wandering off into the surreal... ;-)

I'm glad it raises a grin - I try to keep it light (well, most of the time. I do like a good rant now and again, you know!).

yeh, ranting I do too at times ... looking forward to reading yours as I'm sure they'll still be packed with humour and elegance.. ;)

See what I mean? Pure gold isn't he? :)

Ahem.

Ladies, please... behave.

...wandering off into the surreal.

Or startlingly recursive at least. Because, the thing is, on some level Frasier Crane-speak and WASPiness in general are sort of a bastardized American version of, well, Britishness, or what we think of as being such. I had no idea Frasier was shown in the UK, how odd.

I'm listening

After tea, I spend my evening watchng Frasier ( I have the first 4 series on video). He's wonderful! And his dad?!? Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm :) However, next time you feel yourself in Frasier world, I suggest a bowl of Grammy Moon's sheeps head stew ( more of a soup actually).

Those last words " but he was talking palpable nonsense" . yes. that is scary.

It is the attempt to combine socialist economics with an overarching nationalism that was at the forefront of much early fascist rhetoric, beginning with the so-called "Yellow Socialism" of 1920's France and culminating in the Third Way corporatism of modern post-Strasserism. I'll shut up now as I've recently had to write 10000 words on the self-same subject and it's beginning to drive me insane.

I don't blame you. That all sounds rather mind bending...

You can say that again. Exploding head is not far way, I fear.
