It's that Cadillac again....

Ooohh... cut'n'paste from Cadillac.com

Cadillac 16

The Cadillac Sixteen is rear-wheel drive powered by an all-aluminum 13.6-litre engine. It includes technology such as Displacement on Demand, which allows the engine to run on four, eight or sixteen cylinders depending on driving conditions. Other advancements include:

* 7,000 rpm capability
* 1,000 horsepower and 1,000 lbs.-ft. of torque
* Advanced cylinder head port design
* Titanium alloy valves and valve springs
* Variable camshaft phasing
* The interior is a pure expression of design, with fine woods, precision cut metals and crystal used in harmony throughout. The opulent, yet refined, interior features:

Hand-stitched Tuscany leather seats
Hand-woven silk carpets
Custom-designed crystal cluster dials
Custom BulgariĀ® clock
Reclining rear seats with foot and leg rests
BoseĀ® sound system
DVD Information and entertainment system
Fifth-generation OnStar in-vehicle safety and security communication system

The Cadillac Sixteen reflects the bold, dramatic design of the new Cadillac, with much of the car's structure and body panels made of aluminum. The highly refined and malleable aluminum allowed Cadillac craftsmen to create shapes and designs that would not have been possible if only steel and wood were used.

All this and 16mpg, too!

RAR!!

Cylinders... are they those things that Mr Pax likes to make go pop?

Those would be the things.

But in this car he'd have another 15 to take the load...

...malleable aluminum

This advertising copy was not written by anyone with any metallurgical knowledge whatsoever. [/met snob]

...All this and 16mpg, too!

Tch. I could get 12 mpg out of a Daimler Double Six and be in a swisher car.

The question is, under all the glitz and faff, is it any fun to drive? I know 1k horsepower and a 13.6 litre engine sounds impressive, but a Foden truck has both of those, and it doesn't make it a desirable vehicle to drive. It being an American design for American roads, I am instantly suspicious of it's ability to, say, go round corners.

I remain stubbornly underwhelmed.

Does malleable mean something very specific when it comes to metallurgy then? Cos I thought it meant easily shaped.

[deletes long metallurgical screed]

Yes. And Aluminium is notable for not being.

[identity profile] mollpeartree.livejournal.com 2003-07-23 10:49 am (UTC)(link)
But that's just what makes this aluminum so special!

Assuming you want your aluminum malleable, which I'm not sure why you would care one way or another. Ad copy for luxury cars tends to be mysterious that way, I find.

And...

it looks like an Audi.

>Gasp!< Argh, no. I disagree and anyway, you could get an Audi in the boot of this one.

You're probably right about the corners, though.

My Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder (3.0 litre V6 cabriolet) that I had in Vegas was a lovely car - a 4 seater convertible with plenty of grunt - however it cornered like a Damian Hurst Cow. This, I fear is an endemic problem in all US built vehicles (that and the fact that the steering wheel is on the wrong side)

Thanks Heavens for valet parking

in it's trunk, dear boy, not it's boot. It's colonial.

It may be, but I'm not. Hence Boot.

(I can see some pointless and wine-enhanced bickering this weekend, over the relative merits of cars we couldn't afford if everyone on our combined friends lists chipped in. Marvellous.)
