Blowy

Judging by the weather the tail end of last week’s hurricane has finally crossed the Atlantic and is squalling over here. A sure sign that autumn is on its way, if not yet quite here.

And so we enter that period of random coats and jackets, where whatever choice we make, it’s the wrong one. My wrong choice today was to wear my reefer jacket instead of the chino jacket I’ve been sporting over the summer; too hot by half. The chino wouldn’t have stood up to the weather and I desperately need to acquire a new tweed jacket for the autumn/winter. My current tweed jacket would be fine had my rucksack not worn a hole in the back at about the level of my right kidney. Apart from that it’s fine, which is rather annoying.

Still, overall, it’s cooler, which is fine by me.

Squeaky

As the temperature has fallen and the dampness increased, my knees, which I had previously thought to be getting better, have gone sore again. I hope that I am not developing weather-reflecting appendages; that could be very tiresome over the winter months.

I wouldn’t mind so much if they were accurate enough to be weather predictors, but they’re not. They simply tell me what I already know, or can find out by looking out of the window. It’s all absolutely hopeless for planning picnics and that sort of thing several days in advance. A sore knee today does not guarantee rain next week; it simply confirms its likelihood now, today.

If I could somehow turn them around (or rather, their reaction to the weather: I could make money from forwards bending knees, with the right management) and state with some certainty what the weather would most likely be like a day or two in advance, there might be a point to it all. I could at least choose the correct combination of coats and other clothing. As it is, I shall just have to continue squeaking up and down flights of stairs and hope they don’t start creaking like an old gate.
