Pointless telly gripe

So last night we launched on to a viewing of season 2 of The Wire at long last (we have been waiting for them to come down to around £15, which we feel is a fair price for 13 or so episodes). After three episodes I am back in the swing, though I am not sure that season 2 is panning out to be quite as strong as season 1.

I am also pleased to see that 24 season 8 is being transmitted. Given the TV watching patterns in The Carpathia that is going to be a case of recording and waiting for all twenty-four episodes to air before we sit down and watch them in three or four eye-straining gulps.

As much as a very high percentage of my favoured viewing comes from the States, I am continually baffled by the way the broadcasters schedule programmes (well, the major networks, at least). The welcome return of the current season of Supernatural was rather muted by the fact that it was the first new episode since the end of November. These long breaks mid season, combined with occasional weeks off for no readily apparent reason have to be one of the more annoying and avoidable issues. If a network wants to spin a 22 to 24 episode season out for nearly a year, why not broadcast the brute on a regular fortnightly schedule. That would be annoying, but much less so than random stops for re-runs for unknown periods of time.

Still, I’m probably not target audience in most cases and anyway I’m not even in the right country to make my comments pertinent. It’s still annoying, though.

I do like 24, never manage to watch a whole series, but seeing who has infilrated CTU this week is always a giggle and you know there is Kiefer.

I agree; mid-season breaks are extremely irritating as invariably the season has just got going and then they all disappear for a month to eat turkey. Humph. I get particularly peeved because we record everything with a series link, which ends when a block of episodes ends, so we quite often miss the first one or two of the second block because they start up again without the fanfare of a whole new series.

I found that so annoying over Christmas. All the series links broke and we had to remember to go hunting for them once we got to January.

One of the things I do not miss about satellite TV is the insulting habit networks have of showing a prog twice in a season. So instead of broadcasting a new episode that you really want to see (especially if there's a story arc through the whole season) they'll show you something you saw six weeks ago. Jolly annoying, and I gather it's done in Britain now, too.

I like to just rent the DVDs a year later. Much more sensible.
