Born to be tired

A propos nothing, I have decided that just lolling around half awake, listening to the magnificent Steppenwolf is one of the best things I have done recently left to my own devices. They are fantastic and to think I knew little about their music before buying this CD on spec.

Last night I reacquainted myself with the late great Janis Joplin. Why, oh why did I leave it so long to pick up that album? Such talent, such waste. Raw, ragged vocals, strained by smoking and Southern Comfort.

Raw emotion.

And on to the Velvet Underground next...

Shiny, shiny. Shiny boots of leather
Whiplash girl-child in the dark
Clubs and bells, your servant, don't forsake him
Strike, dear mistress, and cure his heart

I say...

Alix and I used to sing along to that in our childish voices...it was on a best of album - we had no idea what it was about and nobody said anything.

Ah, to be that delightfully naive again...

Heh, we have a halfway decent local radio that occasionally plays people like the Beatles, Stones, Velvet Underground - and, bien sur, Steppenwolf. T'other day they played one or t'other VU song (it was 4AM, forgive my poor memory) and I found myself wondering, not for the first time, if Lou Reed really did never sing quite in time to the music (and how the hell he managed it, other than huuuuge quantities of drugs), or whether that's just some effect from the mixing or whatnot at the end.

A few other singers are the same, somehow singing not-quite in time with the music yet always flowing along just fine. I can't do it at all - if it has a beat, I'll fight to be in time. Been wondering whether this is natural or mixed in (or the result of laying vocals after music or something) for years - can someone knowlegeable enlighten me?

Ooer. Technical sounding music stuff.

I reckon you need to ask Roz ([livejournal.com profile] westernind) about that...

Good Lord! You have just cited three artists that I like. Dear me - you must stop that at once! I'm really not used to it!

You see, you do have a little musical soul after all! ;-p hehe.
