Mythical character alive and well.

If nothing else is true in this world, I can confirm that some legends at least, still live, though their sartorial elegance is somewhat diminished.

Changing lines at Euston this morning, I was surprised and delighted to observe Merlin wandering down the platform towards me. I assume it was Merlin; it could have been Gandalf’s granddad. In fact, had he been larger, I might have assumed that he was Father Christmas on holiday, before tooling up for the summer’s present construction gets going in earnest, but he would have needed far too much padding.

It is possible that he was rather younger than he looked, I suppose, but my imagination prefers to place him at the thousand year end of the 70 – 1000 year age span and I cite as evidence the shock of long white hair and equally long white beard. I realise that this is less than conclusive, but there was the air of a Celt about him, and Merlin was a denizen of King Arthur’s court, which of course, was originally Welsh, so I rest my loosely founded case.

The red jumper and chequered trousers suggested that he might be on a golfing holiday, his gait suggested that he might be drunk and his face suggested a certain vacancy, but that may simply be symptomatic of the previous two points.

Anyway, Merlin he is and the world is richer for it.

Probably visiting his old girlfriend Boudicca, who I seem to recall currently resides at Kings Cross station.

It does, but it was buried deep in a pocket at the time and I didn't think of it, sadly.

Anyway, he might not have liked it and it doesn't do to incur the wrath of wizards!

Yeah, I suppose the flash would have given you away. A pity.
