Permanent Accounts

One or two people on my friends list have purchased permanent accounts on LJ. I was thinking about it too.

Is there any real point? What do people who have them think?

It seems a bit steep at $175, even with $25 going to charity. A paid account is $19.95 a year, so it would take around eight and three-quarter years to pay for itself. Am I likely to be still using LJ in 2017? It will be 6 years in January since I started keeping a journal…

Permanent accounts seem like a bit of a status thing more than anything else. Also they give more userpics and more storage space for Scrapbook and voice posts and the like. None of which bother me in the slightest.

Since LJ became a corporate entity I've been more reluctant to give them any more money. I had a near permanent paid account until they sold to 6apart.

I bought mine a few years ago when it would be a 6 year thing to pay back (I think they were doing a deal) I kind of figured it was the only place I'd be posting and it would future proof me a bit from new costs. And at the time they weren't all commercial and stuff so it was paying back to the people giving me somewhere to post.

I can't say if it's been 'worth it' either way as, to be honest, I've no idea what not having it would be like now...
