Does anyone know of a good on-line bookseller – particularly second hand books – that isn’t Amazon?

This is not because I dislike Amazon, quite the contrary, but they ain’t got what I’m looking for at a price I’m willing to pay. EBay is a bit “hit and miss” for my current purposes, too.

Any advice, Oh, Lazyweb?

www.bookfinder.com

Searches tons of used book sites at once. The downside is, it's U.S.-centric, though there are British booksellers in the mix.

Not to be confused with www.bookfinders.com, which a coworker discovered was a site for pron books (when I told her the URL rather than cutting & pasting & emailing. Whoopsy!)

Seconding using Green Metropolis as convenient and cheap. Have both bought and sold through them successfully.

Another vote for abebooks - and there is abebooks.co.uk, I believe.

If it is SF/F you are looking for then I would highly recommend - http://www.i-m-t.demon.co.uk/

Do let Pete know that I gave you his details, should you go down that route...

COAS Books (coasbooks.com) is an actual shop, has around half a million items in stock, and ships worldwide.

Have you tried book mooch? not a shop per se, more a book-swapping club, but I use it a great deal and with no problems so far

Another vote for Green Metropolis if you want to buy second hand, although some sellers are a bit generous with their description for 'Acceptable' because it's the lowest category some people go a bit tattier than the guidelines. They have a nifty tell me when someone comes along with one of these books feature which I've used for out of print stuff before. I can't be bothered with selling on there anymore though, as nothing happens for months at a time..

Thanks for the new ideas... abe books and book finder...
