Tonight we will be setting up and dressing the Christmas Tree. Yes, it’s that time of the year again; the one where people turn their houses into strange little representations of a romanticised Victorian idyll. Still, eh? Makes the place look nice and honestly, don’t you feel a bit of an idiot slurping mulled wine in any other circumstances?

The down side to all this is that I have to go into the attic to get the fixings. We are an artificial tree household. Only once that I can remember did anywhere I have lived have a real tree. It cost a bomb, smelt great and then died, which is unsurprising in the circumstances. On the whole I’d rather watch them grow somewhere than have them slowly die of starvation and thirst in my living room. It’s not very festive.

We have some new decorations to add to the mix this year, including a couple of baubles be bought in Edinburgh back in August. There is a shop on the Royal Mile that sells Christmas tat probably all year round. It seems a bit odd going in there in the height of summer, but hey ho.

I daresay there will be festive music. And we will eat traditional seasonal fare. You may know it as Chinese Takeaway.

It's possible to hire a tree for the Christmas periodx keep it alive, send it back to be replanted and then have it delivered again for your use the next year ... continuing until the tree is too big when it would be permanently planted and you'd start again with a new tree. When I get so I'm having Christmas at my home I think I'll do that, until then I don't even have a fake.
