It’s no good, I shall –reluctantly- have to bow to the inevitable and concede the point that I don’t get enough sleep.

Over the years I have developed the habit of staying up and faffing around on the computer until around 2am and them wandering off to bed in the later early hours. This was sustainable when I used to get into work around 10.15 to 10.30 (love flexible working) and only had a 20 minute commute. I would get up about 8.30, have a coffee and then hang around until at least 9.30 before wandering out and making my way to the office via any number of shop windows and interesting little nooks and crannies.

Even when I left Clapham and moved to Whetstone, I could afford to stay and listen to the radio until just after 9.00am before wandering down to catch the Northern Line into work.

Now though, I get up at 7.00am and am out of the house by 8.15 at the latest. I realise that this is still late by many people’s standards, but nonetheless, it does mean that 2.00am is a little late to go to bed. Five hours sleep isn’t something I can survive on these days, even with weekend catch ups. I have been trying to get to bed earlier with mixed success. Last night I turned it at 12.37 (I recall checking the time as I got into bed), but really I should try and make a habit of going to bed at midnight at the latest, so I can get at least six and a half hours sleep a night.

The trouble is, I am by preference, a night owl (though occasionally, in the summer, it is great to be up at the crack of dawn before the rest of the world wakes up, and particularly if it’s sunny, to sit outside with a coffee as the world wakes up), so I find it ridiculously difficult to go to bed at a sensible time, despite the fact that I am always bloody knackered. And that’s all it is. If I get a couple of nights with the extra sleep, I’m fine and then I start hanging around doing frankly not much until I get shattered again.

Must do better.

I'm the opposite. I've always been a morning girl. I'm realising that anew this year because I've been getting up for the gym on a few days and now I'm waking at 5 every day and really enjoying reading and the like before work. It's somehow nicer in the dawn of the day before work stress breaks the peace.
