I heard a gas boiler explode when I lived in Manchester. Took the wall of a building out. Sounded exactly like a bomb. Which I know due to having been on the non-bomb side of Harrods when that bomb went off.
The "Immediate Sirens" did sound like a police car rather than an alarm system, so the cops could have been lying in wait for the exploder/explodee, or were perhaps the perpetrators themselves.
Of course, the sudden sound of police sirens in South London is hardly a rare event. Count the number of times you hear them directly after flushing the toilet. Spooky!
