I have identified, or rather named, a human sub-species. It has been around for some time but has not, as far as I am aware, ever been recognised by science.

I am therefore naming it unilaterlally: Munter-Gatherer.

The Munter-Gatherer is a person, usually male, who whilst clearly having sufficient income, nonetheless persists in rooting through public litter bins and private skips for things to take home.

This is quite different behaviour to the genuine beggar/baglady genus.

Mark W: Ahhh yes, my Dad once managed to get an upright piano from a skip for our house, worked to with a bit of restoration and tuning.
But I have to say the first thing that came to mind with that phrase was Rich P's old habits in nightclubs, he gathered quite a bit in the old days :).

You may have identified a separate sub-genus requiring further definition and thought. Although there's no reason why one term couldn't cover two things - it's all a matter of context.

Is a munter-gatherer not a chap who persists in picking up ugly women?

As opposed to the litter-tout who roots though the garbage looking for something to resell.

Bins are a no-no but looking in skips is all part of being a man. One man's trash and other cliches.
