Well, I’m back.

A good weekend, all in all, up in Norfolk. Ate too much food, drank too much alcohol. I am all too practiced in the former, and getting rusty with the latter. It rained a lot, and was rather chilly, but no sign, other than a quick shower on the way up, of the promised and much-heralded snow. Boo.

Since he acquired his new P*** P****1, [livejournal.com profile] romney has been busy piloting his palm, including multiple entries concerning the weekend just gone. A recap of the details from me would only be a scandalous duplication of effort, so I do not propose to do so. If you’re curious, and don’t mind unchecked ty7pos, go to his page. Once the novelty has worn of, however, I expect output on that LJ to drop back to its normal rate of one entry every six months.

I have decided that I need to try and lose weight earlier rather than later2. Normally a fatty (and of long-standing), I am now feeling it more than usual, and I can’t pretend that nine months habitation of the Athenaeum Club with its proper, rodent-free cooking and food storage facilities hasn’t had an adverse on my already impressive physique. My initial plan was to wait until the new year. I now think that maybe I should bring the attempt forward. I foresee an unfeasible amount of home-made vegetable soups cropping up in the near future.

There is, of course, a worry with this that my carbon footprint3 will soon be dwarfed by my methane footprint, but it can’t be helped: Veggie soups, provided they do not contain anything tasty like peas and potatoes can be very effective. Look forward to future entries written under the influence of vitamins and roughage. I cannot be held responsible, so I give you fair warning.

Back to the weekend. What happened that has not already been chronicled by [livejournal.com profile] romney? Not a lot actually, though I was rather disappointed, as we drove through Norwich, to find that the logo writ large upon the side of a building, Inchcape announces a local car dealership, and not a very small superhero.

1Long time readers will recall the reason for the asterisks.

2I must explain the irony of the situation: I had to put down a half-chewed Mars Bar to type that properly.

3Impressed, huh? I know all the modern buzz words.

Meester Eeeengleeesh is a good person to grill for fine veggie soup recipes. And other stuff.

We have been investigating soup since we got one of those mixing wand thingies. Roast sweet potato and pepper is nice (idea stolen from Meester English). Assorted bean and tomato type things are also nice (I am going to put a bit of bacon in this too next time, though not especially healthy). Of course, we just like soup, and are not being health conscious so may have no valuable advice to give.

What's up with pea and potato? Both of these things are nice.

Spinach and potato curry... that's nice too. I don't put much oil/fat in mine so it probably isn't bad for you either.

My favourite soup to make is fish noodle soup, which has white fish of some kind, chilli, spring onion, a little bit of thai green curry powder, pak choi, miso soup stock, rice noodles (plus pepper, basil, bouillon). This is the bollocks, but a bit of a faff as it requires that you purchase a super-market's worth of ingredients.

Anyway, I'll stop babbling about food on your journal. I love food. Mmmm.

Soup for weight-loss sounds effective, but I also recommend a brisk walk every day. I went on the Atkins diet a couple of times, and lost weight dramatically - but it's dangerous to do it for more than a couple of weeks as (a) you'll want to kill everyone in sight after a few days of eating the same bloody stuff and (b) you lose weight from your muscles too, including heart muscles. This is not a good thing, in fact losing that much weight in so short a time really buggers your metabolism. But the diet is jolly effective. I try to brave it out for two weeks, eat normally for one (in reasonable quantities) and go back on it again for another two. I've lost as much as 2 lbs a day on it, but I find it's best to take a few days off work during the diet, so there are no people around for me to take out my fury on, poor sods!
