It begins...

Deep breath. Sound the advance! By the left, Quick March!.

I go now to make changes to the layout of The Tower in an attempt to a) tidy it somewhat and b) introduce a measure of Furtleproofing to the breakables.

I'm not sure this is possible, but I must give it a try; the results of many years' of geeky collecting are suddenly on the endangered list and few are replaceable. I have a plan which involves moving some furniture about. Doubtless the new arrangement will provide new and exciting possibilities for cold cast porcelain catastrophe, but one must make the effort. I think that bounceable plastic bric-a-brac will find its way to the fore, with the more fragile elements pushed back into the relative gloom.

The next stage, of course, will be to dust (shudder) and maybe hoover.

This may take some time....

Might I suggest liberal use of barbed wire (possibly electrified) and gun-turrets?

Though we (alas) run limited risk of being Furtled, the number of weapons, toddlers and fully grown mobile disaster areas chez Brown mean that we have, over the years, invested in a quantity of glass-fronted cabinets, which, though they bring in their wake their own danger zones, have proved reasonably effective in protecting the more delicate bibelots* himself has collected. I would recommend it.

*Do I mean bibelots? Items of purely collectable value, appealling almost exculsively to the male of the species, and whose charm is largely inexplicable to any passing female.

** I've been painting all weekends, and the fumes have apparently rendered me incapable of finishing sentences without attempting a subordinate clause of limited value.

Ah, a bibelot. You don't often get to use that in a conversation.

Now see, I only collect curios. trinkets and gew-gaws. I'd need an entire new shelf for bibelots.

*Wanders off to find entire new shelf*

Bibelots are not an entirely male preserve per se, though I dare say there are sub genres that are.

what have you done kt??!!

I am horribly reminded of Georgie in the Mapp and Lucia novels who devotes entire days to fussing with his bibelots....

It's a fair cop - though in no other way does young Caddyman resemble Georgino...

Not being acquainted with Mapp and Lucia, I don't quite know what to make of this exchange...
