I made time last night to watch the first two episodes of Battlestar Galactica season 3. Set four months after the events of the season two finale, it’s off to a great start and I see precisely why [livejournal.com profile] pax_draconis suggests having a pillow ready for the end of episode two (the effect was a little spoilt in my case as the torrent I’d downloaded had a short trailer for next week’s episode, but it didn’t give too much away. I hope).

I have to say that I do not see how Gaius Baltar is going to survive the series. It’s one thing being the puppet of the Cylons, but since the humans no longer trust him, he is running out of options. As with many of these things, it is less the outcome than the journey to the conclusion that makes for riveting watching.

Season three has started very well, though once again, it might be nice for once to watch something that does not take the opportunity to draw clear parallels with the situation in Iraq. The Cylon occupation of New Caprica is clearly a dark mirror image of the Coalition occupation of Iraq, seen from the insurgents’ point of view, complete with the recruitment of over zealous police from within the population. We are probably a bit close to events right now to know whether or not it will still stand as a piece of drama in say, ten years’ time, though I think it will.

My final comment, or rather query.

Is Jamie Bamber ill, or it just clever prosthetic makeup? I know Adama mentions it in the dialogue, but good grief. We know who’s et all the pies now, don’t we? I reckon he got his hands on Hurley’s secret stash in LOST.

What else? Oh yes. Next time I leave work early to watch an England game again, on the grounds that they can’t possibly play that badly twice in a row, remind me that whilst that sentence is strictly true, it does not preclude them from playing worse, which is what they did.

Stupid own goals.

Still, Battlestar, eh? If you aren’t watching, you should be.
