Chilly this morning; crisp even. Walking down to the tube station at Whetstone I was musing on the possible need to break out my scarf in the near future though not , as yet, a coat (Big and tough, me; not like these wimpy southerners). It’s far too early for a coat unless there is a rapid and concerted drop in temperatures. Though pleasant in the morning, by evening the tube is still much too warm and a coat would be more trouble than it’s worth. Anyway, it is not as if I am out in the weather for very long anyway. Five minutes maximum at the central London end, five to ten minutes at the Whetstone end. My tough and manly Salopian physique (hem, hem) can cope with that.

That said, I seem to developing a cold. Or rather one of those nearly colds that contrives to clog your nose and sinuses, make you sneeze occasionally and make your throat feel a little rough but not downright sore. I don’t feel quite ill, I don’t feel quite well: sort of in the middle; it is very hard properly to feel sorry for myself in these circumstances.

Even though we can tell in the mountains much easier than flatlanders can, when the weather changes for winter, I still step outside sans jacket on brisk November mornings and wonder why I get bronchitis later in the month. It's because I think "I'm only in the open air for thirty seconds up the hill, and for one minute down the hill." When will I learn? When hell freezes and hair grows atop my bonce.

At the first sign of sniffles, I recommend you take those "Airborne" tablets. Dissolve one in a glass of water. They taste pleasant and are crammed full of anti-sniffle medications.

I saw an ad for those not long ago - they really work? I may have to invest - I get nearly-sniffles all the damn time, moreso since I came to this country with its huge aggressive bacterial fauna.

Some of my troubles, though, are more allergy-related than cold-related, and sometimes a well-timed antihystamine can clear them up. Might be worth a try if you're that way inclined. I can't take decongestant (BP too high), but even a little helps sometimes.

Course if I was my grandparents I'd say "Wear a coat!" But I'm not, and I don't even wear shoes in the house of any kind, including the slipperish; at least I know I have only myself to blame when I get a runny nose.

Yes they really do work. My lovely Stacey, who watches mucho TV, even the commercials, bought a tube of the things and told me to take one, and by jingo my symptoms disappeared within an hour or two. Apparently a teacher came up with the idea of combining every vitamin and sniffle-fighting nostrums in one compact tablet, and took it to a pharmaceutical company and voila (hey, shouldn't there be an accent over the a?), she is making money off her invention. And rightly so. Anyway, wrapping up when the cold weather comes is always a good idea.

As our cat gives me allergies now and then, I'm okay with an anti-thing-amine, and it takes a bit longer for the itchy eyes and runny nose to improve.

You aren't supposed to take antihistamenes with high Beep?

Oh dear...

No, you can take those. What you shouldn't take is decongestant, since it's a vasodilator I think, and that's not good for high beep. Or something like that. Normal non-decongestant-containing antihystamines should be fine.

Has every sympathy with caddyman as I retired early from work today at lunch time on the grounds of feeling lousy, headachey, stuffed up, shivery. Am sitting at home now, having just got up from sleeping from lunch time, with a cup of tea and two Sudafed -these are highly recommended for sinusitis but caution is needed as they contain paracetamol. Hope you feel better soon.
