Typical, isn't it?

Then most exiting thing to happen in Victoria for years that doesn't involve Seamus O'Timing Device of the Fatwa Pixies and I only find out about it on the 10'o'clock news much later in the evening. This despite being in the next building along!

In protest against climate change, some bloke free-climbed Portland House yesterday.

The French climber says on his official website: "Spiderman is my nickname, but I have no supernatural powers. When I climb skyscrapers, there's no special effect. No safety net."

Mr Robert has so far climbed more than 70 of the world's tallest structures, including the Eiffel Tower, the Empire State Building and the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur.

I daresay I'd have heard about it sooner if he'd fallen off...

Tis true. He got bit on the bum by a radioactive spider (traditionalist, me).

Not to take anything away from your posts at all, but I had to comment that your tags often make me giggle even more than the posts themselves!

I heard he was doing the climb but I couldn't actally be bothered to walk to the window, as it was hardly the most difficult or impressive climb in the world....they've got bleedin' handrails up the whole side of the building...

Lightweight.

On the political point...yes I imediately saw the link between behaving like a tit and climbing a building and Environmental destruction.

I shall follow suit and protest against 'political repression in foreign parts' by eating lots of food and opening lots of presents next Tuesday.

This same guy climbed the Sears tower in Chicago a few years back using only his hands and some kind of powder to make them grippy. That IS an impressive climb. I watched it live on the tv news for as long as I could before I had to go to work. I thought it was pretty swell, myself.

I think he got arrested but I don't think he was jailed or fined or anything.

He's world famous for this sort of stunt.
That powder is a resin and chalk mix. I tend to climb on Southern Sandtone or on indoor walls so don't use it myself.

..but a climbing mate and I have often comented on how technically easy Portland House would be to climb.....

Oh that sounds so snobby! I can just imagine two blokes with their ropes and stuff discussing the difficulty level of the various London buildings LOL

tee-hee

I didn't mean it to sound snobby. Don't get me wrong, I'm not fit enough to drag my sagging derrier up the west face of Portland House. It's just that there really are rails going up the entire height of the building, all one has to do is climb up a rail as you would a rope. Monsieur is a much more accomplished climber and is able to take on much greater challenges that Portland Hse.

It's the equivelent of an Olympic swimming donning a pair of armbands and going for a paddle in childrens garden pool.

Good job it was warm enough for him to do it without his hands going numb.
