Tuesday, August 10th, 2004 03:10 pmI am typing this from the depths of rural Shropshire, Wem to be precise, on my sister's PC. I have mastered the installation and operation of the broadband for her, but mysteriously, not the little problem of going off line whenever the phone rings.
Still, it's progress - beforehand it would not connect to the intarweb at all.
The upside of this extended weekend is three days in the countryside. The downside is that I have to be up at sparrowfart in the morning to get back to London by lunchtime. Not that I have to work when I get there, mind, since cunningly Wednesday afternoon is the office picnic. Hurrah.
The conference in Birmingham went as well as -or probably better than - expected, thoughn I do not recommend the Metropole hotel to we ordinary people. Stella at £3.60 a pint, the lunchtime burger witha pint of coke floating in at about £14... On Friday night I sent what I thought was a cunningly subtle cry for help via SMS to
pax_draconis who lives but 20 minutes away from Birmingham International, but it transpires that he had turned his phone of, so I was condemned to spend the night in overly expensive 5-star accommodation.
Mutter.
My presentation to tenants on Saturday was reaonably well received in that neither I nor my boss were chased from the hotel by tenants weilding pitchforks and burning brands, but telling them that their rents are going up faster than inflation over the next ten years, and trying to spin it as being in their own best interests to boot is never going to be popular.
And on that note I shall adjourn this sitting, and begin a download of Firefox for this PC and then check once more for viruses and stuff. Last night I cleared of 159 items of spy and scumware, 49 of which had got loaded as registry keys...
