I reached the office this morning and experienced one of those ”Oh shit; what have I forgotten?” moments. The place was like the Marie Celeste, computers on, cups on desks and coats slung over chairs. But there was no one around…

My normal routine is to log in and then go and get a coffee while the PC is booting up. This morning I sat and watched the damn thing boot up – and it is mightily slow. Unable to remember any appointment for this morning, for me, let alone the entire second floor, I experienced that frisson of horror as GroupWise loaded and the tell-tale alarm showed up against the appointments folder.

Except that that is for a short meeting this afternoon. Eventually I discovered that there was a ‘meet the Perm Sec’ affair for everyone on our floor. Well, that’d just be boring, so I got on with the important stuff of drinking coffee and checking my home email.

Good points for today: my boss (who is not a bad bloke, actually) is off sick, so I might be able to get something NWO-related written, and quite separately, I set the torrents running this morning for this weekend’s Stargate episodes. For a brief but glorious ten minutes before I left for work, SG-1 was coming down at the speed of around 200kB/s, meaning I got a quarter of an episode while I was getting dressed. Sadly it had dropped to the more 5-6kB/s by the time I actually left, but I have (unfounded) hopes that it might pick up again.

On a related note, I see the Swedish Government has closed down The Pirate Bay, so that is one less torrent site for us to abuse. Still, if these programmes were actually available on telly, we wouldn’t have to resort to this, would we?

And there’s loads more torrent sites to be had.
