and with a single bound...
Tuesday, July 11th, 2006 12:52 pmOh lawks, criminey. There was a double whammy for your hero this morning, folks.
The alarms went off on time at 7.30 (mobile phone and DAB radio) as usual and all was well. Except that for some inexplicable reason, the radio then turned itself off shortly afterwards and suddenly it was 8.15 and I was sitting up in bed experiencing a sudden adrenaline surge. Not late yet, but close – especially for someone who likes to spend close on an hour waking up gradually…
And once that adrenaline surge has dissipated… oh dear.
Add to this already fraught situation the news that the Victoria Line service was suspended between Seven Sisters and Brixton (though oddly not on the far east end of the line where three stations must have seen more trains moving through in a minute than is generally thought possible) and suddenly getting in to work on time becomes problematic to say the least.
The solution, of course, is not even to try. So I arrived in the office at 10.25 cheerfully extending the blame to miserable happenstance and the tube system. It is true and it never fails to please.
On the positive side, although I woke up at four am for the second morning running, there was neither a headache nor any reason to use the bedside lamp, so I was spared the withering gaze of a suddenly woken Furtle - though a nip to the little tenant’s room and a smoke later, I return to find the available bed space significantly diminished, leaving me to perch uncertainly on a relatively narrow strip of mattress with just my big blue blanky to keep me warm.
It seems the mattress is far more comfortable if slept on diagonally. One day I shall get the opportunity to test this.
