Nerdish Enrapturement
Tuesday, June 19th, 2007 11:38 pmFor the past couple of months I have felt the lack of a decent magazine to fulfil my craving for nerdish information on Sci-Fi and Fantasy telly, movies, books and comics and so forth.
For years I bought and read Dreamwatch (so far back it was called Dr Who Monthly and then DWM before taking on its final title.) It had long since ceased to concentrate on matters Who and had broadened out into a snappy little magazine covering the entirety of the genre. It didn't take itself too seriously and wasn't entirely up its own arse like some publication and neither was it too dismissive. I enjoyed it.
Then in January this year, it ceased publication. It still appears as a website, but frankly that is of little use to me. The website is poorly designed and slow. Not to mention that you can't read it in the smallest room, where the most important cogitation takes place1.
Anyway, I have just discovered SciFiNow, which appears to be in its third issue. It is not that dissimilar to the late lamented paper copy of Dreamwatch, which makes me wander if some of the staff of that organ are not now involved in the new publication. It needs to settle down a bit, but I confess that I quite like it. It's not Dreamwatch, but it will do.
1And yes, I know the purists amongst us will say "yes, you can" but a) I don't have a wireless network at home and b) even if I did, there's no way on God's Green Earth I am taking the laptop into the karsi with me!
