...and to bed.

To bed shortly and hopefully a decent night's sleep. If not, then at least I shan't disturb Furtle who is back in the ancestral mansion for the night having escorted her mother around London for the day. I daresay she will bring you up to date in due course.

Nothing much to add at this point except to note that my book not having arrived after being posted from the US on 25 September, Lulu.com have reordered it for me. This will doubtless get lost in the Christmas post instead of a postal strike as in early October.

They at least are trying. What can you do but hope?

What are the chances? I sit down to watch the latest discs from Amazon and all I get is long lists of names and bank details!1

Oh, I slay myself sometimes.

The weather is bizarrely warm again after the unexpected cold snap. I don’t know if it is related, but after a couple of months’ absence, Creepy Swedish Guy was on the train again, today. My suspicion that he is a troll is compounded by the fact that yet again I have only seen him underground (except in the evenings when it is dark).

There is a strong indication that we may be able to go out to consultation today, a mere month late. I am hopeful, but not holding my breath…

1It occurs to me that overseas readers won’t get the joke: see this latest piece of government incompetence.

Wasting Space

Habit is an odd thing.

I had the bed to myself last night and though I went to sleep in the middle of the bed, luxuriating in all the free space, I awoke teetering on the edge on my side as I do normally. All that space and the opportunity to sprawl wasted.

When I was still on my own and first bought the double bed, I found myself sleeping on the one side anyway. Without realising it, the years of using a single bed in my lonely Clapham Garret had accustomed me to sleeping with my left hand hooked on the side of the mattress and despite having all that extra room I still did so for some months.

I no longer sleep giving the mattress a Vulcan death grip, but it seems that I have reconditioned myself to sleep on that side of the bed again regardless of circumstances.

I have also lost the ability to doze off properly in any position other than on my right side and even if I move in my sleep, I tend to revert to that before I wake up. Am I the only one, or does everyone else gravitate to their own little bit of their nest? Except Furtle that is. Furtle can sleep anywhere any time. On one leg if necessary.

Well, that's that then. A fit result on the night when England were weighed down by their pay packets (notable exception Peter Crouch) and deserved to lose a highly motivated Croatia. Crouch's goal was good; not sure that we deserved the penalty that started off the mini revival. The team's inability to win in earlier games and the need for a helping hand from Israel to make this match meaningful says it all, really. Had England qualified it would have allowed us an exaggerated view of their abilities. Now we know a rebuild and a rethink is needed.

I can't even find it in myself to be bothered. We had a second chance and we threw it away.

Come next summer I shall have to pick someone else to follow. I think I may lay the Curse of the Lea's on Sweden and follow them.
