Yes, it's an IT rant!
Wednesday, October 28th, 2009 11:19 amYou may as well skip on by; this is another grumble about our office IT.
I cannot remember the last time it worked properly for any length of time and I define length of time as ‘for longer then ten minutes’. Today, however, it has excelled itself. As I am typing this, I have enough functionality on the PC to use Word and access the internet. My profile has disappeared and the system is mapping a temporary one out for me. This means that despite the fact that I am using the same desk top as I do every day, it is treating this as the first time I’ve ever logged on, despite it being my third attempt of the day so far.
This temporary profile means that the PC is importing what few settings of mine that it can find. It is also trying to find my email. It is, as I write this, 11.07 am and I have been unable to access anything of any use to me in doing my job since I arrived in the building. When I left in a huff last night, the electronic performance of which I was so disparaging was infinitely superior to this. The email download is particularly stunning; I think it is working backwards. The progress bad started off with an optimistic 5 minutes. Since then it hasn’t moved and is now forecasting 28 minutes.
A little while ago, when the system was having one of its occasional lucid moments, we were asked to fill out an online survey about SpaceFlex and the changes I’ve been griping about over the past few months. One of the questions it asked was “What do you like best about SpaceFlex?” I left that question blank; I couldn’t think of anything positive to say about it. If I could redo that survey I now know what my answer would be: I am grateful that it came along so late in my career, that I don’t have to suffer it as long as some of my younger colleagues.”
Think positive. That’s my motto.
