Having slept in late yesterday and followed that by doing the chores that we had neglected for far too long, Furtle spent the evening killing monsters on Warcrack, while I vegged in front of telly, cursing myself for missing 2/3 of Dan Snow's Empire of the Seas: How the Navy Forged the Modern World (I can pick it up on iPlayer), watching Dr Aleks Krotoski's Virtual Revolution and then QI followed by more and wall-to-wall QI repeats on Dave (which is probably my favourite repeats channel).

The upshot is that I didn't get around to writing anything here and thus I am a day late lamenting the loss of veteran actor Ian Carmichael, aged 89. I don't recall his much lauded turn as Bertie Wooster, but I do remember watching and enjoying his Lord Peter Wimsey, plus a number of movies, not least of which was I'm Alright, Jack, with such luminaries as Terry-Thomas, Peter Sellers, Margaret Rutherford and Irene Handl.

Ian Carmichael as Bertie Wooster

The world of eccentric aristocrats and loony fops will never be quite the same again.

Proving that the Reaper never rests, today brings us the news that veteran Jazz performer, Johnny Dankworth has died at the age of 82. I'm not and probably never will be an aficionado of jazz, but Sir John (he was knighted in 2006) and his wife, Cleo Laine are legendary enough in their field for even me to have heard of and even appreciate the occasional number.
