This is the sort of thing that is obvious enough when you think about it, but also not the sort of thing that springs to mind that often. But seeing Auntie has placed a report on the news website, I thought it would be worth posting a link.

Anyone with a smartphone - not just an iPhone - should be very careful about using the mobile web abroad. After 1 July it won't be so bad in the EU because charge caps are being introduced, but until then and after that anywhere else in the world, you can get stung with unbelievable bills if you use the mobile internet in the same way you would at home.

BBC report on smartphone charges.

According to research by Which?, people using smartphones abroad can pay up to £8 for every megabyte downloaded. That's the equivalent of one email with a photo attachment.

But anyone who downloads videos or films can expect to pay considerably more.

According to Which?, a ten minute video clip and five music tracks could cost as much as £200.
