Last week I was plotting the retirement of my overcoat until the end of the year and the return of winter, but this week I am contemplating digging out my scarf and perhaps even gloves again. The slow march of the calendar does not necessarily match the pace of the weather and the seasons like to blend somewhat around the margins anyway. So there we are; for now it has gone chilly again, even as the buds start to appear on the trees and the daffodils in the back garden show signs of bursting into flower.
When we got home last night, the cat was acting rather oddly; we haven’t worked out why, but he was quite unsettled and when we actually got home he appeared to be at least hesitant to come out to meet us, if not downright nervous. I had a look around the place and everything seemed to be in order; there was no obvious evidence of anything that might have upset him, but he wasn’t quite right all evening, though he did crawl into Furtle’s jumper and go to sleep while we were watching TV.
The only thing that was different was that someone had parked in our drive way while we were out and left a note on their car saying as much. We let it go this time, but if they start making a habit of it, we may have to rethink. It has only happened once that we are aware of, in the eight months since we moved in. I doubt that Jasper could have seen or heard anything connected with that that could have made him agitated, so it is probably just coincidence. At any rate, he went into his daily exile in the conservatory easily enough this morning. I’m not saying we pamper him in any way, but yes, he has a hot water bottle in his bed to compensate for the fact it is relatively chilly in there and he is not the most furry of moggies.
