Quiet

It’s awful quiet here in the office today. Many people have taken today off for the Queen’s Birthday holiday. I have decided to take it on Tuesday so I can stretch the long weekend out for a full week with the use of just three days’ leave.

I quite like it when we are here in small numbers, particularly when those who have not come in are the loud ones. It’s restful.

Still haven’t managed to get access to our electronic archive, though. I hope no-one asks anything specific on policy development prior to 2008.

My initial jollity at the thought of this place being half empty has given way to the usual boredom. There are fewer people here now than there were this morning and I have to confess to being rather less than fully motivated. I am looking forward to my week off so much that time is moving slowly backwards.

That said, I am resolved to leave at about 16.00 of the clock. I just need to slide through the hour or so until that time.

It does not help that I am baking hot. I seem to be radiating so much heat that the plant next to my desk is wilting. I think my lunchtime sandwich may have had more carbohydrates in it than I thought. Or the heating in here is unfeasibly high for the time of year. I wouldn’t put it past them: bleating on about energy efficiency and carbon targets while all the time cranking the boiler up to eleven.

Or I might be fighting something off. I don’t feel unwell or anything, but the past couple of days I have been very congested, so suddenly radiating heat on an industrial scale may be linked to that. I hope not; being poorly is only to be used as an excuse to sag off work not, by preference, something to be indulged in when there is a legitimate reason for not leaving the old homestead.
