Commencing final dissent (A Prelude to Olympic Misery)
Wednesday, July 27th, 2011 10:52 amToday marks one year to go before the London Olympics 2012 opening ceremony.
I am dreading the entire affair. It’s bad enough that a portion of my Council Tax these past five or so years has been sunk on it (though I have to say that the Olympic Stadium and the Pringle look pretty good), but what I really can’t bare to think about is my daily commute1.
I live no more, I think, than three miles from the main Olympics site and my daily commute takes me through Stratford twice a day, straight through the middle of what will be for the six weeks of the Olympics/Paralympics events, one of the busiest parts of London with hundreds of thousands of additional people cramming on to a public transport system that is coughing up blood at the best of times.
Oh yes. It will be late July and all of August; an ideal time to be crammed in London at the best of times. I suspect that I shall be blowing as much of my annual leave allowance as I dare during that period, and arranging to work from home for extended periods if that proves possible.
It is nightmare minus 3662
1Frankly, this is true at the best of times, but…
2Leap year.
