Live and Let Die
Wednesday, October 12th, 2011 11:36 amWell, I’m in a quandary now.
The idea is that we reduce our debts by paying off credit card bills and stuff progressively over the next few months. Although the jobs are secure, there are few opportunities if any, as yet, for promotion and pay is to remain frozen in the short term as we shoulder the combined burden of and blame for Labour’s excesses and the international bankers’ wild speculation.
So, money will continue to be tight and debts need to come down.
Our austerity drive isn’t too horrible, it just means that we have to stick to a prescribed budget, which isn’t unreasonably tight, but which leaves very little wriggle room. Essentially, no random expenditure as in days gone by; I can spend on stuff, but once the ‘pocket money’ has gone, that’s it until the next pocket money period. I’ve been quite pleased with myself so far. I shan’t start spending this week’s allocation until tomorrow unless something unexpected turns up today. With luck, I can come in under budget every week until I want to splurge say, in Forbidden Planet, on a collected edition of a title, or a DVD or suchlike. And I have plenty of books to read both on my Kindle and stacked up in the house.
Into this climate, easily manageable and without much pain, provided it is managed, comes the news that McCartney is touring and will be at the O2 in early December.
And I want to go. I saw him on his world tour back in 1990 and he was great – and let’s face it, he has a unique back catalogue. I was initially put off when I looked at the expected ticket prices last night, but since then they have been published officially and I find that while they are on the upper side of my price range, they are, nonetheless in my price range. The trouble is, it hardly fits in with the current economy drive and we are already booked in to see Def Leppard and Mötley Crüe in mid December and Rammstein in February.
But I’m a Beatles/Wings fan. It’s Macca. How many times more is he likely to come round?
Buy a kidney, anyone?
