The night before last - by which I mean, despite the hour and date, because I haven't gone to bed yet, Sunday - we decided it might be nice to illuminate the Gin Palace with candle light as we sat and watched a DVD of Sleepy Hollow. It was Hallowe'en after all. Well, okay the proper night before last, Monday, was Hallowe'en, but who celebrates anything on a Monday?

Anyway. We lit candles and watched the movie, okay? It was cosy and we were uninterrupted by trick or treaters, or rather we were interrupted once, but I was up to my elbows in creating a macaroni cheese and Furtle was reading and by the time either of us had disengaged from the relevant activity, the kids at the door, being of the post MTV generation and thus having the patience of a hyperactive mayfly, had gone.

And breathe.

So, we had the candy to ourselves. We still have most of it. Actually it's too nice to give to scrounging kids. We watched the movie and we enjoyed the candle light, which adds a nice warming glow to the room: just nice for autumn and winter.

Anyone who knows the Gin Palace will know that we are not short of a TARDIS or two in the place, one of us (not saying who), being quite the fan. One of them is on permanent display in the recess on the chimney breast, where we happen to have four tea lights in little holders.

I think it looks pretty groovy - or at least it does if you remember to take the picture without the flash. But then, not so deep down I'm still a big kid.
