So last night I wandered down to Clapham Junction after work for a pint or ten with a friend of mine who I see rarely, but who has just come out of, as he puts it, the Loony Bin, after having a minor undiagnosed breakdown over the past few months. He was only in the hospital for a week or so, but the complete lack of worry, plus the change in meds (he was wrongly diagnosed as bipolar a while back and given some quite strong psychotropics that had the effect of making him behave like a hamster on speed), seems to have put him on the right track.

I’m not sure that booze is really a good idea in conjunction with his meds, but you have to get out a bit.

Anyway, I got there a few minutes before he did despite it being his ‘home from home’. Crikey, but I felt old when I went in. I think the bar staff thought someone’s dad had come to check up on them, so I bought a cider and sat quietly in the corner, doing a sudoku puzzle on my iPhone.

I intended only to stay for a couple of hours, but we all know how that turns out, so at 23.00 I wandered back to Clapham Junction station to get a train back into the centre. The board was lit up with dozens of trains only one of which ended up anywhere useful. Had I waited, I would have been able to get another train no doubt, but time was cracking on and better safe than sorry, eh? So it was I found myself on the south London loop to London Bridge and taking a fine tour of some of the more remote and forgotten areas of the metropolitan area south of the river. The train went through Crystal palace and Sydenham, for heaven’s sake. Anyway, I got to London Bridge about 12.07am and then took the Jubilee back to Stratford and overland back to Ilford where I arrived home shortly after 1.00am.

Furtle of course, had long turned in, but left me some much needed cold pizza which I scarfed back with a cup of coffee (to counteract the alcohol, of course). I poured myself into bed at about 1.55am and suddenly it was time to get up.

I am surprisingly un-hungover, but I do feel tired. I think I feel like someone’s Dad who went to the music bar to check up on them…
