A birthday

Saturday saw Furtle and I wander into the West End to meet [personal profile] romney on the occasion of his 50th birthday, drink booze and eat rather a lot of Chinese at the Wong Kei in Wardour Street and then repair to the Ship and Shovell, Charing Cross for more booze… I have been past the Ship and Shovell before but not for some years. It may be the only pub that is situated in two premises opposite each other in the tiny alley between the Charing Cross arches. It is effectively two pubs, one of which is set up along the lines of a sports bar, while the other side is rather more traditional and has an upstairs area that seems to be relatively unknown.

The party was made up of seven of us and the time went pretty quickly, though having started early, we all rather faded so that Furtle and I were back at the Gin Palace by about 23.00.

I had forgotten how much I enjoy the food at Wong Kei and the waiters seemed to be rather less rude these days. And the Ship and Shovell has made its way onto Furtle’s Harris List.

Sunday morning didn’t really happen for me and when I wandered downstairs I found that Furtle had done things to the conservatory and living room. I then chipped in by going up into the attic to get some shelving that we had stowed some months ago. Further assembly and rearrangement has found us with the keyboard upstairs and additional space for books (and plants) downstairs. I have to say that it looks rather cosier than it did: we’re getting there bit by bit. There is now just the small matter of disposing of an old fridge that we used to have in the study. It is too small for anything much more than keeping cans in (which is what we used it for) and it must be hugely inefficient, judging by the amount of heat it kicks out. We stopped using it as a fridge some time ago as it was making the study too hot in summer – and the study doesn’t really need the extra heat at that time of year! Anyway, quite how we’re going to get it to the dump, we don’t know as yet.

In then evening we watched the third and final episode of season two (three episode seasons? Come on, guys. I know they are essentially mini movies at 90 minutes without ad breaks, but even so…) of Sherlock. I thoroughly enjoyed it and I think Furtle did, too. Season two has been far stronger than season one (except for perhaps the very first episode). More to the point, I think I know, pretty much how the pulled off the legerdemain at the end, but we’ll have to wait until season 3 to find out, I guess. I just hope it won’t be a full year away.

Sherlock Finale

Yesterday evening over on FarceBørk I mentioned that I thought I’d worked out the sleight of hand in the final scenes of Sherlock. Ms [personal profile] kathbad expressed an interest, but I thought it would be a bit naughty to plant spoilers (even if I am completely wrong, it will give stuff away) where I couldn’t use a cut.

So here is the Caddyman explanation of how the finale was staged, recorded for posterity so that you can flag it up, dispute it, tear it to pieces and/or point mockingly back at it when the entirely different reveal is broadcast when series three airs sometime in the future.

Here be spoilers )

Phew!

We’ll see.

Feel free to chip in.
