Collections
Wednesday, May 9th, 2012 10:36 amWe are in a sort of strange limbo here at work. Officially my old division was wound up at the beginning of the month and we, the remnants, have merged with another division that does vaguely related work to our area. I have a new boss on paper, but am still working with my old boss in fact, and although I am in this new division, I am being tasked by my old Deputy Director. In the meantime, people are slowly floating off to new posts (and going on holiday) and the desks around me, where a year ago you had to fight for space, now lie increasingly empty.
At some point – it should have happened at the end of April, but now will probably be nearer the end of May – we will be moved to a new working area around the back of the building. No doubt someone will take the opportunity to cram us all in to another small space to give us that statutory claustrophobic feeling that we miss so much.
I actually quite like it the way it is, though a few more bodies in the area would be nice. Certainly I do not miss the very loud colleagues on the now defunct Reform Team, who would talk at each other as if there was a busy motorway between them.
Annoyingly, and a little embarrassingly, those of us who are still here in ever dwindling numbers, still face a regular round of leaving cards, which in and of itself, is okay, if a little depressing but these cards almost certainly come with the expectation of a collection, too. That was okay when there were dozens of us, but now even the usual contribution amounts to a relatively stingy total. I have taken to judging each on their own merits. I ask myself the question ‘would I mind if I never met this person again’ and tailor my contribution accordingly.
At the same time, I am very aware of just how generous the division was when they had a collection for our wedding before Christmas. Mind you, there was a division then and it was quite large.
