As first days back in the office after a while out go (and breathe), yesterday went okay. The journey in and home again were fine and the day in between didn’t stink. I just backtracked from using the word ‘suck’ there. Let’s not adulterate the language consciously, when it takes a daily beating on an unconscious level.

No, yesterday was alright. I had a fair number of calls on my voice mail to pick up, most of them time-expired, I am glad to say. Beyond that, the sheer amount of emails that came in after Friday lunchtime when I last logged in was quite startling. It’s no wonder that the system creaks along – not only is the equipment ancient, but the amount of information that gets thrown around the building!

Today has been rather less fun, not least because officers at one of the councils I deal with seem to be having immense and regular brain farts. It’s almost like there is a clerical version of the Keystone Kops going on over there.

Still, onwards and upwards, I guess. Tomorrow I have booked the afternoon off: I am having lunch with my old boss who retired at the end of July. We plan to drink wine, so I think it best that I don’t wander back into the office under the affluence of inkerhol…
