The Power of the Karma Pixies
Wednesday, October 31st, 2012 11:01 amI was vaguely hoping to write a short horror or ghost story for Halloween along the lines of those of years past – they started as Christmas ghost stories in 500 words and then extended to Halloween, too. I expect there are fewer than my memory suggests, but I can’t be bothered to go and check. The trouble with trying to write a horror short is the fact that it has, by definition, have to have an element of horror. And a ghost story must have a ghost or at least the suggestion of one.
I can’t think of anything that hasn’t been done before in one form or another!
Although I haven’t written one for a couple of years I remember that the idea was becoming increasingly difficult. I think that the imagination I once treasured is atrophying certainly as far as ghost or horror stories go. I’m certain that if I put my mind to it, I can write other stuff, but this little niche is proving too difficult. Essentially, I had an idea for the first short some years ago now, and since then I have had to pretty much wrench ideas out of my head and I’ve not really been happy with any of those that followed the first story.
So for now at least, I shan’t be writing a Halloween story, but I will leave you with an observation that makes the day even creepier than tradition would have it. Today would have been Jimmy Savile’s eighty-sixth birthday. Move over Halloween, there’s a new horror in town.
