With Furtle off in Bruges for the weekend with her chums, I took the opportunity to do very little indeed. So little in fact, that I may have taken some of the value from last week.

That’s not to say that I didn’t enjoy myself. I caught up on a lot of telly via iPlayer and re-watched the entirety of Matt Smith’s debut season as Doctor Who. I have to say that even the episodes that I remember being a little below par were more entertaining on a second viewing and now that the Beeb have broadcast season 6 and the first half of season 7, the amount of foreshadowing for season 6 that takes place straight from the first episode of season 5 is remarkable.

Yesterday I sloped off to Greenwich to meet [profile] colonel_maxim. We drank rather too much cider between 13.00 and 19.15. Poor old Furtle, who had got back to the Gin Palace by this point was understandably worried by the stream of only partially coherent texts coming her way, but by the time I had got home and absorbed a curry I wasn’t so bad – though I have to say that long lie in on Sunday morning not withstanding, I was in bed well before 23.00 and asleep before 23.30. Twelve hours awake is enough for anyone.

As I got to Greenwich a little ahead of the Colonel, I took the opportunity to walk around but not board Cutty Sark. There’s been a lot of grumbling in certain quarters about the way she’s been restored, including punching holes in the hull to insert girders that effectively attach to the internal frame and suspend her above the ground. I believe they have driven a lift shaft through the ship for disabled access, too. I didn’t go on board, so I can say for certain.

What I can say, is that the glass roof over the museum, which also forms a waterline base on the hull makes the whole thing look rather splendid. The clipper looks very much the thoroughbred she always was. It’s just a pit, all things considered, that she’s not still afloat.

But when you consider the damage she sustained when the fire struck seven or eight years ago…

The Cutty Sark gift shop is a sad disappointment and a missed opportunity.
