Weekend past

So the winter has half-heartedly arrived this morning, with a smattering of snow closer to the spilt talc effect than a proper covering. The so-called Beast from the East is a little like late Cold War estimates of Soviet military strength: exaggerated and misleading.

Of course, the fact that it is simply cold with a little sleet hasn’t stopped the rail companies delaying and/or cancelling services for a Monday morning and suing a variety of incoherent and contradictory excuses. Frankly we were hoping for a little more – by which I mean a LOT MORE – Furtle and I still harbour happy memories of the unexpected snow day of 2009 when everything stopped for 24 hours and we went for a yomp in the park. But hey-ho… On the other hand, I am expecting – probably (or I suppose I should say hopefully) on Wednesday my Nexus7 to arrive, so I would like any truly rotten weather and the accompanying hopes of unplanned free time to happen once I have actually taken delivery…

I don’t know about you chaps, but we had a pretty good weekend.

I had a nice long lie-in on Saturday and after a few chores, played rather more Warcraft than is strictly good for me. In the evening we watched all of season one of Twenty Twelve, which manages to be fun and painful all at once – probably less painful now that the Olympics are actually over and safely delivered than it was when it was originally broadcast, but nonetheless…

Sunday saw another cosy lie-in followed by a trip to Westfield where we did a bit of shopping. Furtle had picked up an espresso machine on the way home on Friday, so we needed to get espresso cups (we couldn’t find any we liked at a price we liked). We also needed a stockpot to replace the one we recently threw out. We couldn’t find one of similar size, which is beginning to look like we had somehow acquired a one-off all those years ago. We also couldn’t find a decent container for my teabags. Or a cheap metal jug for steaming milk for the once every five years I feel like making myself a latte now we have the technology. All a bit disappointing in may ways, but we did buy other stuff, which I can’t actually bring to mind now. Towels and something.

Anyway.

The prime reason for the trip was to go and see The Hobbit – An Unexpected Journey in glorious 2D (I am and intend to remain until the technology improves appreciably, a sceptic regarding 3D). I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed it – the three hours or so fairly whipped by and not once did I get bored. I’m not sure that I’ll get to see it again unfortunately, so I guess it will wait another four years when the inevitable box set of all three movies appears, that I shall get to watch it again.

Afterwards a trip into the HMV store bagged us a copy of Promethius for £7, which we watched last night (Okay, for that price, but I should have been annoyed to pay to see it at the movies), X-Men First Class for £3, which we missed at the time, but which came recommended, and seasons three and four of The Tudors. So we have plenty of viewing to get through over the next few weeks.

It looks as though there may be a couple of movies coming up that may tempt us to part with shiny shekels, too. Bruce Willis has another Die Hard coming out, which may be fun (you always know what you are going to get with Die Hard); that Bin Laden movie Zero Dark Thirty looks interesting and Arnie has a new movie out, too (you always know what you are going to get with Arnie).

And later in the year there’s a new Superman movie reboot too.
