Warcaftia

The other night after months of rep grinding in Warcraft, I finally, finally raised my main toon’s reputation to ‘exalted’ with the Golden Lotus faction that came in with the Mists of Pandaria expansion, waaay back in September. Previously I had concentrated on a couple of other factions that were easier to get: principally the Cloud Serpent faction so I could get one of their snazzy er, Cloud Serpent flying mounts.

Anyway, having hit exalted with Golden Lotus and incidentally, bringing up the achievement for 25th exalted faction at the same time (who says I sink too much time into this game?), I inevitably unlocked an entire new quest chain.

“Well,” thought I, “it makes a nice change from the daily quests, so let’s do it.” So far, so good. A bit a flying back and forth, delivering ever more ominous messages and then suddenly I have to go out and single-handedly stop an army by doing away with a hundred of its troops. And yet it turns out that I am nigh invulnerable for the duration of that quest at least, because all the chumminess I’ve built up with various bosses on the dailies means that not only do they give me their blessing, making me severely more wrathful than thou, but they deign to turn up, in rotation, to kick some bottom on their own account, pausing just long enough to say what a swell bloke I am.

This, thinks I, is what playing the game is all about: turning into an unstoppable leader in the cause of all that is good, wholesome and freshly pressed. And then they are vanquished and I am given one last quest in this particular chain: just nip along and kill off the main baddie boss, as a good chap. He’s called something unpronounceable “The Blood-Letter” and it turns out he’s a level 90 elite which means he’s no pushover.

I’ve faced these buggers before. I’m used to having more than one crack at them before I work out the best tactic, but blimey, this guy… The sequence of events went something along the lines of: Land, look, die, resurrect, go back, land, look, die etc.

So the ultimate admission of defeat is to wander off to the forums and read up how other people worked through it. Apparently I have to pick up his own spears and check them back at him before they kill me. Cool. I just have to stay alive long enough to see what one looks like, much less hurl it back where it came from…

Still. Another nice fancy flying mount awaits!

Hang on: I can get that anyway… I’m exalted.

Oh yes: Duncan Jones is in the frame to direct a WoW movie. Be good if he gets his dad to do the soundtrack...
