Currently adrift...

I have to say that now I know that I’m moving soon, I am finding it hard to engage with most of the elements of my current job. It doesn’t really help, I guess, that I don’t really have a current job, just a series of tasks swept up from other people who are temporarily swamped. I am just marking time, treading water until I take up my new post where I should have something to get my teeth into.

On the plus side, my hay fever seems to have abated somewhat, so while I’m bored, I am much less of a snot monster than I was. I strongly suspect that I had a cold that got aggravated in turn by the smoke from the bonfire and the high pollen count. It seems to be back at more manageable levels now, with just the odd sneeze and some sniffing. The test will be the weekend, when we go to areas rural for a while. If I can survive that, I shall know that the worst of it was virus and not pollen related.

The monotony of the office was disrupted yesterday by a power cut. I don’t know what the Hell people are doing, but it’s the second power cut we’ve had in the past couple of months. When the power went off we lost air-conditioning, lighting, water and the computers. Shortly thereafter the phones went dead, too. The area I shall be moving to didn’t lose power locally, but they were pretty much as stymied as everyone else because the servers went down and when that happens, you are stuffed unless you have a memory stick. None of our work is held on the local drives, which I don’t think we even have access to.

The upshot was that I hung around until 16.00 and went home. Apparently the electricity was restored just before 17.00. By that time I was well on my way back to Essex.
