Family Funeral
Thursday, July 11th, 2013 04:31 pmIt looks as though next week I shall have to take a couple of days off to go back to Shropshire to attend my aunt’s funeral. We weren’t especially close and it must be close on 10 years since I last saw her. She spent the last few years of her life in a home suffering from dementia. It’s all very sad, but she made it to her early 90s despite a none-too-healthy lifestyle.
I have to say that left to my own devices I should probably have sent a condolences card to my cousins, but she was Mum’s elder sister and although they had a falling out some years ago, I think Mum is trying to hide her quite natural upset at losing yet another sibling. I’m not sure, but I think there may be only two of them left now out of seven, though I frankly have no idea of the status of one of my uncles. Either way, four of them have definitely gone.
As I say, my aunt and I weren’t especially close and Mum’s side of the family was somewhat riven by pointless feuds, innuendo and petty jealousies. Aunt Doris seemed to be in the middle of much of it stirring gleefully as far as I can tell. Despite that, until the final falling out a few years back, Mum kept the lines of communication open and at the end of the day, they were sisters. So I shall go for Mum’s sake, rather than Aunt Doris’s.
