Occasionally something happens that makes me feel old.

On and off over the past couple of weeks I have been re-reading Alan Moore's original run on Swamp Thing still, in my opinion, the best stuff he's ever done. Despite knowing that it was originally published in 1984 and that I used to have the original comics, I had never thought about it in terms of time passed. So, not only are those comics old enough to vote and then some, but it occurs to me now, in one of those moments of sorry realisation, that they were published half my life time ago. I remember having a similar feeling in 1987, when I picked up a book called It was Twenty Years Ago Today about 1967, the year the Beatles relseased Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. Strangely the fortieth anniversary went by two years ago with no equivalent twinge. I am clearly immune now, to Beatles anniversaries.

I wonder what the next thing will be; what sudden realisation of something I already know will make me feel ancient? As I once remarked to the Kaiser...

Going to the Specials gig at the Ricoh last Friday did that to me.

It wasn't that I felt old in the audience - most of us were about the same age. wyzziwig caught the reverse end of that - feeling too young in the crowd.

It wasn't feeling too old and inflexible to bounce up and down and run on the spot enough - I've been like that for years. I did make a reasonable effort though.

It wasn't even when the event was billed as a 30th anniversatry gig.

I think the moment that got me was when they apologised for having not played in Coventry for 27 years, and it suddenly struck me how many of the people I knew wouldn't have even been born then, and also that I'd been in Coventry fr almost that long.

Oh, generally speaking, I don't feel old and in many ways I think I probably act more like a teenager (or a six-year old) than a middle aged bloke. But now and again, the passage of time is highlighted...

That's why when I grow up I am going to be an adult not a grownup. Oh and I plan on being five feet two too.
Today, however, I am 108 because I have been "sorting" in what can once again be called the Guest room.
Let's just say that the local charity shops and the caldicot craft class are very pleased indeed and the local amenities site will be getting a visit tomorrow with the rubbish

Growing old is mandatory, growing up isn't

I have slight flickers of time passing (or rather how much time has passed) every so often - but I was talking to a colleague today and realised that I've been out of uni for over a decade. Damn, that feels too long ago.
