It's marvellous isn't it? The southbound indicator at Totteridge & Whetstone is broken. There is no way to tell when the next train is coming nor where it is going.

On the northbound platform by contrast, it proudly announces "High Barnet" as if there were anywhere else to go!

If you search the Apps Store for an application called 'Tube Deluxe', your problems are solved.

It's got a live feed of the data that goes to the indicators for each station, and it's currently quite happily showing both the north and southbound departures for Totteridge and Whetstone.

It's 59p.

Yes, I have that - but I have top say that I didn't realise it did that, too. These apps just get better and better, don't they?

Almost word for word what I was going to say...

However, the Tube Deluxe app does suffer from one major fault (which I've discussed with the developer) - the route given will always take the fewest number of changes, even if that makes a longer journey.

An example.

Unlike Bryan, I can't STAND the Northern Line, so I'll always drive to Arnos Grove and go to Goodge Street via the following journey:

Arnos Grove - Finsbury Park
Finsbury Park - Warren Street
Warren Street - Goodge Street

Two changes, but a lot faster than the Tube Deluxe version of:

Arnos Grove - Leicester Square
Leicester Square- Goodge Street

When I mentioned it to the developer, he said that when he'd asked people, they'd said that they preferred the "fewer changes" to "least time".

Hmm...

I've also just picked up, by the way, Tube Exits, a fascinating app that works by looking at the journey you want to take and then telling you which tube carriages to be in so you're nearest the exits/platform crossovers.

I actually prefer 'fewer changes' generally, but it would be nice if the option were there to set it as a preference.

I have Tube Exits too, and it's great. I've also got London Bus by the same chap who did Tube Deluxe - it's the full TFL journey planner, including overground trains, buses, etc. Fantastic resource.

I'm in danger of turning into an iPhone bore, because I keep finding cooler and cooler things about it.

I understand completely; I get odd looks from Furtle, because I can't stop checking the brute...

Haven't used busses since I can't remember when...

I use them a fair amount - I'm often travelling around when the tube isn't running. And my closest station is a national rail station rather than a tube, so having all of the timetables together is really useful for me.
