I may have had problems in the run up to Christmas with deliveries from Amazon, but I can’t say that about my most recent purchase. On Monday I ordered a leather case for my Kindle and it arrived yesterday by common or garden first class post. Good old Royal Mail.

I decided a few days ago that despite the rather high prices, I needed a case for the Kindle a) to stop it getting scratched or clattered in my bag, but also b) to provide some kind of shock absorber should I inadvertently drop it on something more resilient than a foam bed. It is a nice little piece of kit, but it is plastic, after all and expensive. I am hoping it is not too fragile, but I don’t want to take the risk.

There are1 a number of options out there that are rather cheaper, including slip cases, but with a slip case you have to take the device out and that means it is not protected. So that meant the leather case that opens like a book cover. At £30 or so, it’s a bit pricey, but it looks very good, is of excellent quality and is very sturdy. I am not disappointed in the slightest; quite the contrary, I am very pleased with it.

1I still think "is" is more logical, but hey, English grammar...

I considered that case- but on balance decided I didn't like the extra bulk (YMMV, naturally!) so I have a neoprene slip case for transporting it, and I read it with no cover on it.

I'm slightly amused that you've made oyur shiny-piece-of-tech-which-means-you-don't-need-a-book look like a book.

Yeah.

It's one of my bug bears. "There are a number" always feels wrong to me. You wouldn't say "There are a car", for instance.

Anyway, I looked it up and it is one of the grand exceptions to the rule that English is so famous for.

I saw someone with one of those covers for their Kindle the other night - they do look very nice.

I thought about that, but decided that the extra £20 was just a little too much to pay.

I daresay there will come a time when I will regret it! Or carry a small torch... ;-)

It doesn't say "Don't Panic!" on the front. I admit to being a little disappointed.

I had an e-book reader to test as part of my job. the day after I received it, some clumsy oaf on the train knocked the bag it was in off the table (a fall of a couple of feet onto carpeted, but still hard, floor). I thought nothing of it, until later, when I discovered that the e-book reader screen had cracked rendering the entire display inoperable. Our support people were quoted £350 to repair it, which was considered a bit much on a £200 device. Needless to say, it didn't get a particularly glowing appraisal when it came to durability.

Compare and contrast with my ipod that accidentally went through the washing machine, and still works perfectly! Wonder what happens if an ipad gets washed/dropped. Must find some frothing Jobsian loon to borrow one from!

Better not tell him why you want to borrow it, then!

I tend to use "There are several options" or some such construct, specifically to avoid that awkwardness.

I would say "there is a number", because the other way makes me scowl. Similarly, I say "there is a lot" rather than the cringe-making "there are a lot". When someone tries to correct me because they are a grammatical disaster incarnate, I shut them down with "There is a lot; there are lots." If they still don't understand, bollocks to them.

I was a little bit against ebooks and readers because I like the feel of a book in my hand and what would happen to an ebook reader if I fell asleep and rolled over onto it? the pages get a bit bent on a book but....
I am really keep to have one now because I have read about them and they can read PDF files and most family history research CDs come in PDF AND I could convert my research to PDF and carry it with me to Open Days and record offices then I won't constantly be staring into space trying to remember the birth or marriage date of a 5 x great uncle.
besides - shiny, want one Nooooow
