We didn't see it when it was released and I don't recall reading any reviews, good or bad, of Ridley Scott's recent review of the Robin Hood legend starring Russell "Cobber" Crowe and Cate Blanchett. I picked up the DVD for £7 in Sainsbury's the other day and we watched it tonight.

title or description

It was entertaining enough, though at over two and a half hours it is one hell of a trailer. Scott is to be congratulated in that he has used the name to sell a story that is probably further removed from the myth that anything Kevin Costner ever imagined. Like Robin Hood Prince of Thieves, just enjoy the romp and pretend that it's not supposed to be a Robin Hood movie.

Loved the French landing craft.

[livejournal.com profile] ellefurtle rated it at about 21/2* stars. I'm inclined to agree.

In other televisual news, we are watching - and enjoying Castle season 2, which is a fine old tongue in cheek romp in the Lew Grade mould.

Edited to add:*Out of five for those who asked.

I thought that the worst thing by far about the film was the criminal under-use of Cate Blanchett. Though really in my opinion any film where she's not on screen at least 50% of the time falls into that category!

Absolutely! I think she's fabulous.

I was wondering that, too.

We watched it and I was waiting for the story to start. Errol Flynn was the best, in The Adventures of Robin Hood.

Have you ever seen Robin & Marian featuring Sean Connery and Audrey Hepburn? I used to watch it alongside with various sandal El Cid and amazon (what´s her name: that martial Godzilla in leather gear with her blonde whimp of a Snatcha Panza) series on TV at my very sentimental russian friend´s place, whose wife was against it. We were all hungover and this was usually sundays at slowly sobering up on their sofa.

We would watch that, Ulf and me or Forever Young or some such crap and at the crucial moment when I heard this suspiciously snif-similar sound close to me, who was trying not to shed even a crocodillo tear at hearing Audrey say: "I did it, because I love you more than God" (Marian has become a nun out of lovesick bitterness, etc. you see) Ulf´s wife, my friend Hilke, would come in and just stare at us with this slightly disgusted expression on her pretty face, adding a dry: "My dear, poor Ulf; is it with FEELINGS and such?!" and he would only nod meekly. Snif. Highly recommended, that one. The film, I mean. It´s quite funny, too and a ...well: sort of different story where Robin is old, still fighting the Enemy til he drops. Probably closer to myth than the one you describe, anyway.

Si senor, merci! That´s the one. Quite sexy if one is lesbian, I suppose? That icon, too. Meaning the right side. The left resembles how Ulf would look if he weren´t a body-builder but he isn´t allowed to weigh more than 100kg or he will be divorced, to his great chagrin. He isn´t dumb so he has stopped taking those pills and powders. I hope.

Entertaining?
Controversial.

I agree that it's worse than Prince of Thieves, but I'm not sure that it's even a good film in its own right.

You mean you hadn't heard about the Crowe interview on Radio 4's 'Front Row'? When quizzed about his oft-wandering accent he took offence and stormed out of the interview. It was ace. He came across as a complete noob*.
