It's interesting how the universe dishes out coincidences.

DT has just come back in a not altogether happy mood from running his Camarilla game; apparently he had to execute a character - which he didn't want to do - because the player was effectively ignoring warnings and in complete breach of Rule 7. The player took it badly; in fact took it personally.

This lead to a reasonably long chat about the nature of writing and running freeforms, and the various responsibilities of players and writers. There is no point in writing and running something if you're getting no fun for the effort. It seems that this is the point - at least with this person - that DT has reached. He doesn't make money out of his efforts, he doesn't charge the players - the venue is free, I understand, provided that there is a reasonable take at the bar when the game is being run. So the position is quite simple, either DT or this player removes himself from the fray. Whether or not it is DT remains to be seen, certainly if he is still interested in running the game, it should be the player who goes. Especially as the player is a) taking it all unreasonably personally, and b) making real-life assertions and accusations about DT, which anyone who knows him even vaguely, would find completely laughable.

It's time for that person to go, I'm afraid.

This lead us to a general discussion on plotting freeforms and such, and inevitably that skirted onto NWO - though we were careful not to discuss forward plot (easily done, we ain't written anything, yet). But it's got me thinking about the final NWO game, and also, despite my reluctance to get writing again, brought me to the realisation that we need to bite the bullet and get started in some form or other.

And so we come to the coincidence. [livejournal.com profile] pax_draconis has noted in his journal that an initial mail out to writers is about to take place. We have, I think, much to discuss. We have a lot to live up to after Rome.

It is rather special, isn't it?

Even if they unload all the other fuel/road taxes to compensate, I don't know where people are going to find the money for this.

I don't have a car right now. Living in London it's more of a burden than a benefit. But if this had been in force 20 years ago, I'd have run up charges of around £45,000 in twelve months, just getting to work and back. That's more than I earn now, 20 years later, and before tax...

I'm not a big car person but that is just WRONG in such an enormous way.

If - and it is so big an if that I can't actually see past it - this is instead of rather than on top of fuel duty and road tax, it will make little practical difference to me. It will send a number of hauliers to the wall, of course, but that's by the by.

I pay about £150 a year in road tax, and I pay 82.9p a litre of fuel, with that litre of fuel taking me, on average, about five miles. Of that 82.9p, approximately 65p is tax. The tariff for the roads is only going to be at the "bad" end of the scale (£1-34 a mile) on the M25 and the M6 - and in any case, I'd be subsidised by work for any lengthy journeys I undertook. By my maths, I don't think I'm going to suffer much under these proposals.

I think it's the damage to road freight that will kibosh this idea, not any complaint from private motorists.

When I saw [livejournal.com profile] lupercal last sunday, we had a brief discussion of NWO, the gist of which was; "it's about a year to get it written!", "We'd better get started then.", "wonder if Ian will arrange a meeting soon."

And that, precisely, is why - if worked through thoughtfully - and accompanied by a strong rail freight programme it would make what I would consider a phenomenally sensible policy - however I think the chances of those two things together happening are minimal
