My1 Grand PlanTM has failed at the first important hurdle, damn it.

It was simple enough, the age old hunt-around-for-a-new-low-interest-credit-card and transfer the balances to it from existing, more expensive cards scheme. Easy, peasy.

Stage 1: Identify the card with the best rate, particularly for balance transfers: check;

Stage 2: Apply for card: check;

Stage 3: Get accepted for card: check;

Stage 4: Receive card; get all excited: check;

Stage 5: See desultory credit limit of lower value than the recycling value of the plastic in the card: check.

I don’t need another card; I wanted to transfer the balances and close cards to save money. I think I shall have to phone them up and say thanks, but no thanks and then send them the pieces in a nice envelope.

Back to the drawing board.

1More accurately, Furtle’s Grand Plan. But it seemed to be such a good one!

You can still save a chunk of money moving some of the balance onto it - the interest rate is streets below the other ones. The rest, well - I am thinking!

I did this with my credit card and it worked. I applied to transfer the balance at the same time as applying for the card, so it automatically did it all for me, I just had to sign something once it was agreed. I went from Barclaycard to Virgin. Obviously I'm going to have a different credit rating from you, but I can't imagine my rating will be anything special.

If you are in doubt about your credit rating you can check with a credit rating agency to make sure you have no black marks against your name. The name of the big one a lot of places use is escaping me for the moment. But you probably would just be refused if this were the case.
