Wasting Space

Habit is an odd thing.

I had the bed to myself last night and though I went to sleep in the middle of the bed, luxuriating in all the free space, I awoke teetering on the edge on my side as I do normally. All that space and the opportunity to sprawl wasted.

When I was still on my own and first bought the double bed, I found myself sleeping on the one side anyway. Without realising it, the years of using a single bed in my lonely Clapham Garret had accustomed me to sleeping with my left hand hooked on the side of the mattress and despite having all that extra room I still did so for some months.

I no longer sleep giving the mattress a Vulcan death grip, but it seems that I have reconditioned myself to sleep on that side of the bed again regardless of circumstances.

I have also lost the ability to doze off properly in any position other than on my right side and even if I move in my sleep, I tend to revert to that before I wake up. Am I the only one, or does everyone else gravitate to their own little bit of their nest? Except Furtle that is. Furtle can sleep anywhere any time. On one leg if necessary.

I wander off a couple of times most nights, dealing with random small child midnight crises. Iain gravitates over to my side about half the time, and I have to squeeze into about a six inch gap. The other half he's obviously meandered over, failed to find wife, and gone back to his own side *taking the duvet with him*

I have a preferred position to go to sleep in- sprawled elegantly on my left side with my rich arm tucked cosily under the pillow. I almost always wake up on my back though, even though I can't get to sleep on my back no matter how hard I try.

I do lose parts of the bed too, but usually to a cat, who has decided that under the duvet between us is his favouritest place ever. He purrs so hard he wakes us up!

Go to sleep on my right side, arms straight out across the bed, like a sleeping doggy. Awaken on my back, like a beached whale.

Thank the powers that we're not the only ones. [livejournal.com profile] pennyanne and I drift off to the land of nod with equal amounts of duvet. By about 0430 each morning, the daughter of Bast who deigns to be known as Josie has curled up between us and stolen large chunks of it.

Go to sleep on my side (of superking size bed note) only to find that Mr B has tumbled in at some fairly ungodly hour and wandered over to my side and managed to tangle about half of the duvet (superking size) underneath him (I get the blame for pinching it!) all this equates to me have about 1 foot of a 6 foot wide bed and in severe danger of falling out.

When Mr M was working shifts I used to fall out of his side of the bed so often that I took to putting his pillows on the floor before getting into bed because they softened the landing place a little.
