What is the point of offering a home delivery service, if you exclude items from home delivery?

We are trying to buy a couple of cheap armchairs for the conservatory. Nothing fancy, just cantilever arms chairs, wooden frame etc. à la IKEA Poäng series. We want them in red as the nearest match for the colour scheme in there.

But IKEA won’t deliver them. They used to deliver them. We have a pair in black that I bought back in our Athenaeum Club days. Even disassembled, they are too bulky to fetch from the store on public transport, so that’s that.

We looked at alternatives in the same price range, but everywhere else, they are either out of stock or available in pale colours that would be impossible to keep clean, so we are back to square one.

I hate being on a limited budget. Maybe we'll have to contemplate bean bags, God help us...

As of four or five months ago, they delivered *some* of the Poang range but not all of it. Which is odd. We ended up with the leafy patterned one which is ok in terms of spills of tea and coffee but possibly not ideal for red wine!

As already noted to Furtle: www.streetvan.co.uk might be useful? (Short-term van hire in the same vein as Streetcar)

It's a thought, but I'm not sure we'd get our money's worth - the registration cost is more than the cost of one of the armchairs, with useage charges on top.

Plus we'd have to amble down to Barking to pick one up and drop it off again.

If you want a courier, I can assist but I'd need some help in store!

Likewise, one of the uses for a network of friends (even bizarre internet friends) is to be able to ask favours now and then. Aside from the Ford Mundane I commute in being reasonably big with the seats folded down, the Big Red Truck seems capable of moving most things...

Unless you really must have this model of chair (which does look stylish), why not look around your local second hand furniture store (if there's one)? You might be lucky and find something suitable.

I fall off those in an amusing fashion. Every time.
